Kenn Bell, a freelance filmmaker and animal welfare advocate, talks with me about how he created his powerful, heart-rending documentary called Second Chance Dogs.

His story begins back in 2011, when Kenn developed the critically-acclaimed documentary Hero Dogs of 9/11, which aired on Animal Planet in both the U.S. and Canada. His success with this documentary led to a more ambitious project with the ASPCA (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) that would later become Second Chance Dogs.

What is Second Chance Dogs about? It tells the story of how the ASPCA Behavioral Rehabilitation Center is dedicated to giving these abused and neglected animals another chance. Through innovative techniques, patience, and complete commitment, the staff at the ASPCA Behavioral Rehabilitation Center is moving these animals — once considered hopeless cases — from rescue to rehabilitation, and ultimately into safe and loving homes. Over the course of six months, we meet several dogs in the program and follow their progress as they learn to be handled by people, walk with a leash, engage in healthy play, and exhibit the kind of social behavior that make dogs so special and beloved.

Earlier this year Second Chance Dogs made it’s first appearance on Animal Planet. And now, it’s available for viewing on Netflix. I encourage you to go watch the documentary. Be sure to have a box of tissue nearby when you do! Kenn is a fascinating guy with a passion for animals and filmmaking. You are going to find Kenn’s story inspiring!
