Hundreds of mistreated dogs, some with feces in their fur and with matted hair and swollen eyes, were seized from a Wayne County property on Friday morning.
It's being called the largest raid of a "puppy mill" in North Carolina state history. North Carolina has no laws against the facilities, which breed dogs in sub-standard conditions.
The owner, Virginia Thornton, faces a civil suit filed by Wayne County Animal Control officer Justin Scally. The judge will decide whether she keeps her animals or if they become the property of the county.(C) 2008. The Goldsboro News-Argus.
