Sheila Wise Rowe: Faith and Mental Health

Speaker,  author, spiritual director, trauma therapist - Sheila Wise Rowe - joins the podcast today.

Sheila is the author of two books, “Healing Racial Trauma” and “Young, Gifted, and Black:  A Journey of Lament and Celebration”.

Sheila discusses her work in South Africa, starting a group home for women, working with church leaders, and other individuals after the abolishment of Apartheid. She discusses the parallels of working in South Africa and the Unites States, returning in 2016 when there were many political and social shifts in the county.

Tune in to hear Sheila share how she imagines “what does this mean” with the church and witnessing from the perspective of the Pentecost. Sheila believes the church must show up in ways that speak to the hurt and trauma individuals are experiencing. Sheila gives an account of the church starting a visitation ministry for individuals who were terminal with AIDS after some had been abandoned by their church.
