Episode: 00048

Release Date: March 29, 2021

Description: In the 1990s, the New York Police Department (NYPD) set up a program to quantify, analyze, and provide discussion points to address (crime) problems in their jurisdiction; this became known as CompStat. Over the years, many agencies around the world adopted their own variation of CompStat to analyze and evaluate the impact of their respective patrols and resource allocations. In this episode, Deb Piehl explains how CompStat was implemented and effectively utilized at NYPD, and how agencies often miss an important aspect of CompStat: the solution -- "CompStat is not about the numbers, but what is being done to address the issues out there." This episode is filled with information on different data resources and how to utilize them (e.g., DDACTS), data quality assurance techniques, and addressing data quality issues. Deb is a considered a subject matter expert (SME) in CompStat, DDACTS, criminal justice policies & procedures, and of course, crime analysis.

Trivia: Deb Piehl was the first recipient of the Bryan Hill award for her service and dedication to the advancement of the crime analysis field.
