For their powerful debut record, Knowbody has collaborated with Peer founders Max Gardner and Cory Simpson on the three-track Gehenna EP [Peer 005]. The Bay Area label’s fifth release interjects a promising, new name into the worldwide conversation on techno.

Growling specters snarl from a shroud of dense atmospheres in “Hellhound,” the first track of the EP. A murky low end offset by dusty hi-hats adds depth to the vivid mental imagery evoked by the three artists’ joint effort.

The title track acts as a palate cleanser. Gardner, Simpson and Knowbody programmed resonant percussion to a bouncing beat structure that underscores reverbed lead synths wailing in monosyllabic vowel sounds. “Gehenna” undergoes a vibrant metamorphosis over the course of its six-minute runtime.

Simpson and Gardner’s “Dynasoar” rounds out the EP by casting light on the concepts therein from yet another direction. Shrill and serrated synth work protrudes from a pleasantly diffused arpeggio as igneous textures rattle up and down the dynamic range.

Techno’s depersonalized mystique is alive and well with Peer. The label has thus far struck a commendable balance between securing releases with underground folk heroes and providing a platform for talented up-and-comers. Their commitment is entirely evident in the Gehenna EP.
