Apple Works. Android Works. Windows Works. Just Maybe Not For You. - Sanspoint. - Essays on Technology and Culture by Richard J. Anderson
Oh, hell with it. I’m sick of hearing knee-jerk Android bashing come from obviously smart people who should know better. The most recent episode of Amplified was absolutely painful to listen with Jim Dalrymple’s claim that Apple “is the only [company] that has lead” in the tech space. This is absolute nonsense, and he knows it. Jim “likes to use products that work” and Apple products work for him. Great. They work for me too. I wouldn’t have a MacBook on my desk, an iPad in my bag, and an iPhone in my pocket if this were not the case.
I, Cringely Ashton Kutcher's Steve Jobs somehow misses the whole point - I, Cringely
But forget the chronology, the historical and casting errors, what we have here is a TV movie (think Pirates of Silicon Valley) with a feature budget — hence the great cinematography — yet without a soul. At the end of the film Jobs is cleaner and more stooped, but inside there’s that same old Steve and we don’t really understand him any better.
The gold iPhone 5S | iMore
There are a bunch of rumors and speculation making the rounds about Apple adding gold to the color options for the upcoming iPhone 5S. I've heard the same thing, but probably from different sources. I joked about it yesterday, saying we might soon have Threepio Gold to add to the existing Vader Black and Storm Trooper White lineup. But beyond rumors, speculation, and jokes - and even a gold iPhone 5S poll we ran - I find myself thinking about the idea a lot today.
Where Apple and Samsung get their customers - Apple 2.0 -Fortune Tech
The CIRP report is the most detailed we've seen on where Apple and Samsung get their customers
Goldfinger: The Next iPhone | TechCrunch
That’s the latest I’m hearing from multiple sources after several weeks of rumors and possible component leaks suggesting the same thing. At first, I couldn’t believe Apple would break from the tradition of offering the simple choice: black and white (or “slate” and “silver” if you prefer for the iPhone 5) for their flagship device. Gold simply seemed too gaudy, perhaps even tacky. But a few compelling arguments countered my disbelief. And now, upon checking, sure enough, there will be gold.

TiVo introduces new Roamio DVR with built-in iOS streaming | Macworld
In its first major hardware upgrade in three years, TiVo introduced its fifth-generation hardware DVR series on Tuesday. On sale now with the odd nickname of “Roamio,” the new boxes promise a faster user interface and built-in streaming to iOS devices. At first glance, this new generation of TiVo looks like a big step up for cable TV subscribers who want to ditch their generic cable DVR.
Boycott Cathay Pacific Airways | Boycott Cathay Pacific
I can’t hold my tongue anymore. After months of silence due to a legal battle I was involved in, I have to let you all know about Cathay Pacific Airline’s horrible treatment of my instruments.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on Tuesday published an Apple patent for a method of generating and manipulating a three-dimensional object on a computing device, with the process controlled by special gestures made above a touchscreen's surface.
What’s inside Samsung’s Galaxy Gear smartwatch? Here are some key details — Tech News and Analysis
It was about a week ago when Bloomberg reported that Samsung was getting ready to launch its smart watch called Galaxy Gear. Since then we have been calling around and our sources have come back with enough details for us to give a reasonable assessment of what this watch could look like. Our sources tell us that the September 4, 2013 launch is pretty certain and there is a likelihood that the company will hold events in both Berlin and New York. Samsung might even have a pop-up store in Times Square where it could sell the watches. We reached out to Samsung’s spokesperson and are waiting to hear back from them.
How Bitcoin thieves used an Android flaw to steal money, and how it affects everyone else | ExtremeTech
Fans of the fledgling cryptocurrency known as Bitcoin got quite a shock in recent days as some clever thieves worked out yet another method to swipe virtual cash from unsuspecting users. The source of the theft was traced to a bug in Android, and now Google has acknowledged the flaw exists. Not only could this further tarnish the reputation of Bitcoin as a secure anonymous currency, but it could spell trouble for an enormous number of other Android apps.

5by5 | Hypercritical #1: Dream Crusher
John Siracusa and Dan Benjamin discuss the sad state of TV technology, why the TV situation is worse than music and even phones, why Apple has decided it can't solve this particular problem right now, why TiVo sucks (but is still better than all the other alternatives), and which box, of the ten connected to your TV, is the best one to use to watch Netflix.
