The Left's War on Science

Many in the media say there’s a conservative war on science. Is this true? No, says John Tierney, Contributing Editor at the Manhattan Institute’s City Journal. Tierney says “the real war on science is the one from the left.” Subscribe to my YouTube channel: http://youtube.com/johnstossel Like me on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/JohnStossel/ Follow me on Twitter: https://twitter.com/johnstossel John Stossel points out that people on the right are more likely to believe in creationism. Tierney answers, “creationism doesn't… affect the way science is done. I can't find examples where the right-wing stopped the progress of science… whereas you can look on the left and you see so many areas that are taboo to research.” Gender differences, IQ trends, genetically modified foods. Tierney says the left stifled research into what could have been a second Green Revolution to feed Africa. People who study gender difference have leaned to keep quiet, says Tierney. “You can't say that there are more men are more aggressive, more risk-taking, that status matters and making money matters more to them.” Finally, Tierney complains that Universities are utterly dominated by leftists. In the social sciences, Democrats outnumber Republicans by at least eight to one. In some fields like sociology it's 44 to one. Students are more likely to be taught in sociology by a Marxist [25%] than by a Republican [2%]. Tierney says “once an academic department gets a majority of people who are on the left, they start hiring people like themselves, and pretty soon the whole department is that way. They start to think that their opinions and that their interests are not only the norm, but the truth.” John Stossel says: think about that, next time you hear about a "conservative war on science".

The Great American Tax Ripoff

Tax Day gets a lot of attention, but John Stossel says that attention is misleading, because the April 17th deadline is only for income tax. That's just a fraction of the taxes Americans pay. ---------------- Subscribe to my YouTube channel: http://youtube.com/johnstossel Like me on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/JohnStossel/ Follow me on Twitter: https://twitter.com/johnstossel ---------------- You probably know about property, payroll and sales taxes, but there are also lots of hidden taxes. Kristin Tate reports on them in her new book "How Do I Tax Thee? A Field Guide to The Great American Ripoff." Tate found a hundred hidden taxes -- a rifle tax, airplane and hotel taxes, dog license fees, a blueberry tax in Maine, a sliced bagel tax in New York City (whole bagels aren't taxed), and so on. Our camera followed her as she asked people if they knew about these taxes. Few did. When people did know about them, like the dog license fee, they assumed it went to cover the public costs of dogs. But Tate says: "In most cities it doesn't go to dogs. It just goes to the general fund like all of these other fees." Stossel assumed 9-1-1 fees went to maintain the emergency system. But Tate says they usually don't. "In most states and cities the 9-1-1 fees just go to general funds," she said. In Chicago, "They hiked their 9-1-1 fee in 2008. The reason for the hike was to fund their Olympic bid." But when Chicago lost its Olympic bid, the 9-1-1 fee hike stayed in place. "Once they put [taxes] there, they almost never go away," Stossel suggested. "Absolutely not. Government only grows," Tate said.

Jordan Peterson on Finding Meaning in Responsibility

Published on Apr 17, 2018

Jordan Peterson is an unlikely Youtube celebrity. The Canadian psychologist lectures about things like responsibility. Yet millions of young people watch his videos and line up to hear his speeches and buy his book 12 Rules for Life. It was number one on the Amazon bestseller list for a month. -------------------------------------------- Subscribe to my YouTube channel: http://youtube.com/johnstossel Like me on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/JohnStossel/ Follow me on Twitter: https://twitter.com/johnstossel -------------------------------------------- John Stossel asks, what could make a book about responsibility take off? "People have been fed this diet of pabulum, rights, and impulsive freedom," Peterson tells Stossel. "There's just an absolute starvation for the other side of the story." The other side of the story, says Peterson, is that "it's in responsibility that most people find the meaning that sustains them through life. It's not in happiness. It's not in impulsive pleasure." Peterson instead advises: "Adopt responsibility for your own well-being, try to put your family together, try to serve your community, try to seek for eternal truth... That's the sort of thing that can ground you in your life, enough so that you can withstand the difficulty of life." Many leftists hate Peterson. They attack him for saying people should be "dangerous." Peterson explains to Stossel that he means people should have the capacity to be dangerous, but control it. "People who teach martial arts know this full well," Peterson says. "If you learn a martial art you learn to be dangerous, but simultaneously you learn to control it." Advice about that, and responsibility, bring Peterson big audiences. Soon: Another Stossel video with Peterson—this one about gender difference and whether people are allowed to speak about that on campuses.

Little Pink House

Susette Kelo bought a run-down home. She fixed it up and painted it pink. Then the government came and took it. ---------------- Subscribe to my YouTube channel: http://youtube.com/johnstossel Like me on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/JohnStossel/ Follow me on Twitter: https://twitter.com/johnstossel ---------------- "Eminent Domain" has long allowed politicians to grab your property to build roads, railroad tracks, a border wall--anything they claim is for "public use." But they wanted Kelo's house so they could give the property to a private developer. Is that right? A new movie called "Little Pink House" tells the story of how Susette fought for her home, all the way to the Supreme Court. Eventually she lost her case, and her home. Justice Sandra Day O'Connor explained the problem in her dissent, writing, "nothing is to prevent the State from replacing any Motel 6 with a Ritz-Carlton, any home with a shopping mall, or any farm with a factory." The decision alarmed people across America. Some states passed laws limiting their politicians right to grab your property. Several years after the Supreme Court's decision, John Stossel went with Susette to look at the place where her home used to stand, where politicians had said "the tax-paying development" would be. There was nothing there, just unused land. Even today, 13 years later, there's still no development. The politicians were wrong. Susette and others lost their homes anyway. John Stossel says this new movie, "The Little Pink House," which comes out at the end of the month, is a good reminder of just how powerful, and wrong, politicians often are.

Congratulations Annelise Kofod! You win first place in the High School Division of the Stossel in the Classroom video contest on price gouging. The contest topic: "Natural disasters often bring people together, as they undertake rescue operations and work to rebuild their communities. People outside the affected communities usually offer additional support. But what about those that see a disaster as a way to make money? Create a 1-3-minute video, arguing for or against laws that prohibit price “gouging" during an emergency. How do such laws affect disaster victims? How do they change the incentives of potential suppliers?" Visit http://stosselintheclassroom.org for future contests, free videos and teaching guides.
