Recorded at the BookFest Windsor/Festival du livre Books and Brunch presentation, this live recording features a thought-provoking conversation between author Rinaldo Walcott and University of Windsor professor Natalie Delia Deckard about Walcott's much-discussed book, On Property: Policing, Prisons and the Call for Abolition. The book has been nominated for the Heritage Toronto Book Award, longlisted for the Toronto Book Awards, and selected as both a Globe and Mail Book of the Year and one of CBC Books Best Canadian Nonfiction of 2021.
The opening remarks for the session are provided by Irene Moore Davis. While we apologize for the unexpected venue-sharing that caused some background noise, the conversation rises above the challenges to inspire new conversations about social justice and the way forward.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Rinaldo Walcott is the author of Black Like Who: Writing Black Canada and Queer Returns: Essays on Multiculturalism, Diaspora and Black Studies. In 2021, Walcott published The Long Emancipation: Moving Towards Freedom and On Property: Policing, Prisons and the Call for Abolition. Walcott is a Professor in the Women and Gender Studies Institute at the University of Toronto. His research is in the area of Black Diaspora Cultural Studies, gender and sexuality.
