Wanna know what makes me afraid of things going bump in the night?

Well, this time last year I did a show about what makes people scared. I thought that was a fairly interesting topic to talk about since it’s Halloween, and this is the time to be scared. I think my earliest memories about being scared probably were in a movie theater in Steger Illinois where we were watching a movie and I remember burying my head in the seat of the chair because I was terrified of whatever it was that was on the screen. Fast forward a few years I remember watching another movie, this time I was scared but I still watched it.

The movie was called Funeral Home. Funeral Home and it was originally released as Cries in the Night. A 1980 Canadian slasher film directed by William Fruet. Basically a teenager, played by Lesleh Donaldson, spends the summer at her grandmother's inn. Of course it is a former funeral home.

How about literature, what scares you and how?

I remember reading a book about ghosts when I was little and not being particularly scared. In reality, stories about ghosts, even supposedly term ones, don’t really frighten me. Never quite understood why. Although I highly suspect that has to do with my own experiences with the paranormal as a child. Generally speaking they weren’t terribly scary. I just never experienced a terrifying situation with the ghost.

However, I did read a book when I was younger called The Oddkins by Dean Koontz. That book scared the crap out of me. Just the way it’s written rose really kind of terrifying. The only reason I think it scared me as much as it did was because the book itself is deeply unsettling.

If you look up on Amazon, you’ll find the following description, “The Oddkins, secret toys that aid and inspire children facing serious problems or sorrow, battle a band of evil basement toys in their search for a magic-sustaining toymaker.”

The terrifying part for me is that evil toys can exist. It kind of goes back to the old school poltergeist seen where the clown comes to life. I don’t care who you are, that’s one of the scariest things you’ll ever see on film. And we love it. Fact of the matter is we love being scared.
