Can the setting be a protagonist? What the heck is he talking about now?

Have you ever read a book where the world played as much of a role as the characters did? I don't mean strong writing in the sense of world building, I mean in the sense that the world itself was a living, breathing thing?

How about characters who were as much a part of the world building in the sense that their dialogue actually made the scene work?

Truth is that a lot of time we, as writers, intentionally blur the lines between setting and character. In Terry Brooks, "Magic Kingdom for Sale", the fictional land of Landover plays a magical role and it senses the illness or the health of the kingdom. It reflects the way the kingdom is being held hostage.

In the movie, Citizen Kane, the sled takes on an almost legendary role. It embodies the younger version of the main character.
