This is the keynote presentation made at the 2019 Women Managing the Farm conference in Manhattan.
Dr. Jayson Lusk provided the keynote presentation titled, “The Food Police,” on Thursday, Feb. 7, to open the annual conference, which is co-sponsored by K-State Research and Extension.
The presentation is based on his book of the same name and argues that the U.S. food system is being redesigned in ways that ignore the realities facing most consumers and farmers.
He says the “food elite” in America have caused food prices to rise beyond the means of low-income consumers and harmed efforts to use emerging technologies in the food industry.
Lusk is a Distinguished Professor and Head of the Agricultural Economics Department at Purdue University. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Food Technology and his Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics from Kansas State University.
