Nice to Chat to new  GB agegroup athlete Kieran James

Kieran says

"I wasnt very sporty as a young kid, but was generally very active.  Around 14 I decided to play professional football despite not being able to get in my school or local football team. Worked hard at it, achieving most improved player in my first season. then most improved and players player the year after. I was accepted into a feeder academy for Plymouth Argyle at 16, but  it was mainly due to academic merit. Achieved most improved the first year again. Then I studied sports science at uni to support this goal. But at 22  Irealised/felt it wasn't going to happen."

"I stopped any formal training, other than the odd amount of football, but i was injured almost every year or 10 years so retired from that."

"In 2018 I was looking to do a challenge that scared me. So because I couldnt swim more than a length, and never put my head under, I thought the prospect of swimming in open water with others was the perfect fear to overcome. I trained and finished, tried again the year after and did better."

I then did a series of bets that spurred me on to getting a coach, and taking it more seriously and then in 2023 I qualified for GB.
