Farmers can easily get the short end of the stick when it comes to selling their cattle at a sale barn. The way that happens is if a check bounces because there's really nothing protecting them. There are only a few states that have actual laws, but those can only do so much. Luckily, The Livestock Marketing Association has tried to take the lead on this and help out the farmers.

Ideally, if the check the farmer received bounced, they would either get the money from whoever bought the cattle from the sale barn, or they would be able to get their cattle back. Either way, that's a way better option than what happens now. Chelsea Good, Vice President of Government and Industry Affairs at the Livestock Marketing Association, explained the situation at hand.
