Carrie is originally from St. Louis, Missouri. She studied fine art at Columbia College in Chicago and graduated in 1997.

She majored in photography & painting.

After spending six years travelling Carrie moved to Edinburgh in 2003 where where she set up as a freelancer mostly working on photo shoots, before landing a job from a volunteer position at Stills, Scotland's centre for photography. From that emerged a six year long career working for the organisation in various managerial roles until towards the end of her time at Stills she took an interest in sewing and launched a series of pop-up weekend or hacker-spaces called The Stitch Lounge.

Although these proved popular and fun, her idea to open a permanent sewing cafe slowly faded.

In 2011, Carrie left Stills, having decided to dip her toes in the corporate sector, and emerged with a senior role in a digital marketing agency. After four rewarding years at the agency Carrie embraced a new challenge and on the back of her experience as a successful Airbnb host she enrolled in a one year full time Interior Design course. These gave Carrie her next level confidence needed to quit the day job and launch Carrie Susan Interiors in early 2016.
