When we associate sense of self with our body, then we will constantly be in defense mode. Not only does our body need to be protected against various forms of attack - both physically and psychologically - but we also see the body as a frail entity that will eventually die.

Believing we are a body, we are continually under assault. This is powerfully illustrated by a workbook lesson in A Course in Miracles which says, “If I defend myself I am attacked.”

The Course goes on to further state: “Defend the body and you have attacked your mind. It is essential to realize that all defenses do what they would defend.”

The ego leads us to believe that we are these bodies. It further counsels us that we need to defend ourselves, otherwise, bad things will happen. And we believe it.

But when we return to our right mind of spirit, we realize that there is nothing that needs to be defended. “In defenselessness I will be strong, and I will learn what my defenses hide.”

Let’s recall our true nature as spirit and that we need “no defense against the truth of our reality”.
