When it comes to spirits, there are several that we have come to be familiar with during our years of tasting at About Beverages. However, there are still several styles or sub-styles that we want to try and this week we finally are getting to one we have talked about for years, Mezcal. The agave plant is famous for being the base ingredient in tequila (which we are familiar with) and it is also used in the making of mezcal (which we are not as familiar with). Mezcal gets its start by having the agave plant roasted in underground pits which give it a smoky quality not found in tequila. For this episode we will be trying the Espada Pequena Mezcal from Trader Joe’s. Made in Oaxaca, Mexico this was recently added to the Trader Joe’s roster of spirits and we are excited to finally bring a Mezcal to the tasting room to share with you. In addition to that we will also be mixing up a cocktail using the mezcal. What did we think? What do you think?
