Dr. Higgs is currently an engineering professor at Rice University. He is one of the few Black engineering professors I've met in my life, none of which were at my Alma Matter, Auburn University. Since I didn't have any Black professors there was a question that always persisted in the back of my mind "How would things change if my professor could relate to me?" It's been proven countless times that when students see someone that looks like them in positions of power it motivates them to strive for greater success. Also, having those figures can be provide the safe spaces that are sighs of relief. I wondered how Dr. Higgs felt about that sentiment and thus got him on the podcast and asked the question. After all of it, his biggest piece of advice? Everyone should get a doctorate. If you want to know why you should tune in.
