Thanos

Created in 1973 by Jim Starlin, Thanos first appeared in the pages of Ironman #55. Heavily influenced by Jack Kirby and his work on the DC New Gods, Starlin originally patterned Thanos after the New God character of Metron (chair and all). However, he received feedback from Marvel’s, then editor, Roy Thomas that if he were going to pattern the character after one of Kirby’s New God characters, he should mimic the look of Darkseid- the only cool character, according to Thomas. Thanos was redesigned into a bulkier character and based on early appearances, you can certainly see the Darkseid comparison. Thanos has gone on to become one of Marvel’s ultimate cosmic characters and has proven to be more than formidable with his extreme brawn and vast intelligence. Team Diabolical eagerly awaits the eventual showdown between the Avengers and Thanos in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe!

The Tick

The Tick’s creation is a source of great inspiration to Team Diabolical. An 18 year Ben Edlund created the character as a mascot for the newsletter of his local comic shop, New England Comics. The character became so popular that Ben was able to secure a deal with FOX for an animated series that he would write and produce. Years later the Tick landed on prime time television with a live action show starring Patrick Warburton – and while the series only lasted 9 episodes, Ben stayed in complete control of the character the entire time. We have to admire that level of passion and dedication to a character. Certainly Ben’s tenacity allowed him to take this comic book store mascot to heights most of us only dream of. We eagerly await the return of the Tick and his moth pal Arthur. Here’s hoping it’s soon.

Joker (Batman 1989)

Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman film delivered a lot of memorable scenes and dialogue, however, for Team Diabolical it was Jack Nicholson’s portrayal of the Joker that really captured our imaginations. When you’re talking memorable villain reveals, both the Shattering Mirror scene and the Museum scene from this film get top votes from us. Nicholson’s delivery was spot on and created two truly memorable acts of villainy that have stayed with us all of these years. Be sure to hit the links below to relive both scenes in all of their glory.
