Jesus doesn't say "If you fast." He says "When you fast," which means fasting should be a discipline that is a part of every Christian's life. But when we fast, who are we desiring to impress? Are we desiring the adulation of people? Or are we desiring that of God?
Fasting, when done with a proper heart posture, shows God that we are serious.
