This week: Handling Our Intensity In Our Relationships

Patterns are common in many marriages- sometimes emotional intensity can cause conflict.

Heightened emotions can often be overwhelming for the other person. It can feel like aggressive or overwhelming.

Self-awareness of how you communicate is paramount.

Timing is everything. If one spouse is in a heightened emotional state, NOW is not the time to say “calm down.” Wait until they have calmed down and THEN discuss how it makes you feel.

The importance of initiating an emotional reset, sometimes many times in a day. Don’t let negativity seep into everything else in your day.

Emotional Unloading: Finding methods and tools to calm yourself before you have a conversation with someone, whether it is physical exertion, or brain dump.

Recognizing why your partner may not be engaging or responding. How can you have a conversation that allows them to engage comfortably?

Disclaimers can help! Let your spouse know if you just need to unload, and it isn’t personal. Set up the conversation to alert your spouse to what you need.
